Edinburgh is known as the birthplace of Harry Potter (or rather The Elephant House claims this title) where JK Rowling wrote many Harry Potter sequels. This lovely city is full of history but if you are ready to see the history of Harry Potter, then look no further than these wonderful 6 locations!

It is said that JK Rowling drew her inspiration of Hogwarts Castle from looking up at Edinburgh Castle. Looming over the city, Edinburgh Castle sits high up on Castle Rock. The castle is absolutely stunning and houses the crown jewels. Can you image sitting in The Elephant House looking up at Hogwarts Castle?
JK Rowling wrote the Harry Potter sequels in this lovely café, so The Elephant House claims to be the birthplace of Harry Potter. Nestle yourself by the window and grab a coffee and cake. Be sure to checkout the restroom as Harry Potter fans have left their colorful mark!
This graveyard is just around the corner from The Elephant House and is said that JK Rowling drew character names from reading the grave markers. Burials have been taking place at this graveyard since the late 16th century. Take a look around and you might just spot some familiar names like Tom Riddle, McGonagall, and “Mad Eye” Moody.
Just off the Royal Mile at The City Chambers, you will spot JK Rowling’s handprints imprinted on the ground in gold. She was awarded the Edinburgh Award in 2008 and her handprints were memorialized for the occasion.
From the Grassmarket, head up W. Bow Street and you will see a rather familiar looking street. It is said that JK Rowling took the inspiration for Diagon Alley from this curving, colorful street. This street is lined with amazing boutiques, including a few Harry Potter merchandise stores. Museum Context is a cozy store that sells Harry Potter merchandise and The Boy Wizard (below) is a Harry Potter fan’s dream!
This store is located in “Diagon Alley” and is a Harry Potter fan’s dream! They sell a huge array of Hogwarts House merchandise, clothing, home accessories, wands, books and movies, sweet treats, and stuffed animals. You will not find a larger selection of Harry Potter merchandise!
